Archangel (Samaria, #1)Book Review:  Archangel

Author:  Sharon Shinn
Published:  April 1997
Series:  Samaria #1
Genre:  Clean Adult Fantasy

The Setting - Taken from Goodreads
And so it came to pass...
Through science, faith and force of will, the Harmonics carved out for themselves a society that they conceived of as perfect. Diverse peoples held together by respect for each other and the prospect of swift punishment if they disobeyed their laws. Fertile land that embraced a variety of climates and seasons. Angels to guard the mortals and mystics to guard the forbidden knowledge. Jehovah to watch over them all...
But an age of corruption has come to the land, threatening their peace and placing the Samarians in grave danger. Their only hope lies in the crowning of a new Archangel. The oracles have chosen for this honor the angel named Gabriel, and further decreed that he must first wed a mortal woman named Rachel.

It is his destiny and hers. And Gabriel is certain that she will greet the news of her betrothal with enthusiasm, and a devotion to duty equal to his own.  Rachel, however, has other ideas...

My Two Cents
Sorry guys!  Life has been a little crazy the past week.  We sold our house and bought a new one and went to a family reunion in good old Idaho.  So my next 4 posts are going to be short and sweet.

I really enjoyed Archangel.  It has some typical angel cliches like gorgeous and sun-tanned angels, but the story really is unique.  Rachel is an interesting and brave, yet still very immature.  And by the end of the book I still couldn't tell whether she had matured any.  And therein lays my only problem with the book.  Rachel and Gabriel are "meant to be together" but both are very stubborn and it takes a lot of work for them to actually stand to be in the same room together.  By the end of the book, Shinn tries to humble both of them but I'm not sure either are very penitent.  But I hope it works out for them!  Archangel was a very clean and fast read, 4.5 out of 5 stars.  You would like Archangel if you enjoy romance and especially if you enjoy books about angels.  I don't think I'll read more in this series.  While this book has a sweet romance I'm kind of done with angels for another few months!  But read this if you're like me, a hopeless romantic!
